Daily Photo – The Megahangar at NASA

Here is a zoom-in of the picture subsequent to give you a clarity of the size of this beast.

Imagine a hulk skyscraper, but vale and filled with people creation rockets.  That’s what the VAB is.  To really get a clarity of the size of this thing, look at the outline of the male station in the distance, his physique backlit by the door.

The VAB, or Vehicle Assembly Building, is the worlds largest single-story building, and it’s where NASA assembles many of the rockets, together with the strong Saturn V.  It’s also the tallest structure in the US that’s not in a downtown area.   It’s situated at Launch Complex 39 at the Kennedy Space Center, and it’s overwhelming dot com.

The thing is so big that it even has the own continue system.  In fact, on wet days it can even sleet inside the building!  In my print below, you are really only saying part of it.  Off to the right, they are fueling up the Atlantis for the arriving mission.  Staring through the girders from another angle, you can easily see the hulk orange tank going through the pre-launch ordeal.

Getting into this place was very difficult.  I felt privileged to even get through the assorted confidence screenings and get the bureaucratic capitulation to go inside.  They let in little groups of us from the Tweetup, and we have to thank Stephanie Schierholz for creation it all happen.  It’s one of the puzzling places on earth I’ve regularly longed for to visit, so we was very vehement to be inside.  My subsequent idea is to get back inside and get up higher… maybe even get in while they are prepping the subsequent rocket.

I have many more shots of this structure that I’ll be pity in entrance weeks and months… you guys know how we like to keep these threads and stories open for a long time!
