Dog lively photography is not the easiest of skills to master. The speed of the dogs, together with the gait at which dogs shift in the ring, equates to the photographer needs to be on the round all the time, and ready for any eventuality.

Equipment: Personally we work with a DSLR, as the settings are simpler to control. You need control over the shiver speed, to discharge blurring of the dog. A speed of 1/800th might be required, going up to 1/1200th if conditions allow. A discerning focusing lens is required, due tip the speed of the dogs. Reach on lens should have a smallest of 100mm, and you routinely wouldn’t need more than 200mm. This is due to the size of the rings.

Position: Where you upon all sides yourself in the ring is important, and will possibly make or mangle the pictures. Unless you are very lucky, you will not be authorised into the ring, and will have to mount on the outside. Ideally, you would like to be a upon all sides to get one burst at a 45 grade angle, one burst conduct on, and a ‘different’ obstacle. Different obstacles embody apparatus like tyres, dog walks, A frames, weaves etc. Do not upon all sides yourself side on to a jump. This will make the shots scarcely unfit to achieve.

Working: When the dogs start, get your concentration on the first burst or obstacle. Do this by focusing on the tip club of the jump, or the apparatus where you want to constraint the dog. With a DSLR this is easy to achieve, by half dire the shiver button. Then when the dog is in upon all sides to jump, entirely press the shutter. Remember, due to the speed of the dogs, you need to recover the shiver just prior to the movement you want to capture. Then pierce onto your subsequent burst and next. With practice, this becomes easier. With dogs completing the course in about twenty-five seconds, you begin guidance how to shift form one burst to the subsequent at a very discerning speed.

A few little pointers that will help:

  • Watch the owners as the do the course walk. This will uncover you where they are going to be, and more important, what side of jumps they will be walking.
  • Never be fearful of being told you busted someone’s run. We get this all the time, and it is used as an excuse. Dogs should be means to finish the course in any case of distractions. If you are a distraction, the ring stewards or judges will discuss it you.
  • Get down low. Remember dogs are not as big than humans, and the best shots are performed by removing down low. Lay down if needs be, or at the very slightest lay on a low chair.
  • Watch your camera settings in the ever becoming different light. This is very critical if you are outside.
